Critical Home Repairs

Launched in 2023, Habitat Wausau’s Critical Home repair has helped dozens of homeowners with critical projects.  Projects target homeowners who are 60% or below the area median income based on HUD guidelines and vary based on household size.  Most of the labor is completed Habitat Wausau’s construction team of volunteers.  Costs for critical repairs include building materials and sub-contractors are capped at $5,000/project.

Critical home repair project types:

Home Preservation: Exterior work that includes painting, patching, minor repair, landscaping and replacement of exterior building materials for maintaining good or sound condition.

Weatherization: Improve the energy efficiency and indoor air quality of a home. This can include the replacement of windows and doors and the addition of insulation.

Critical Home Repair: work to address health and safety issues and code violations.

Ramp Installation:  Residents with mobility issues can remain in their homes.  Check out our Ramp Up Marathon County Blog for updates on projects. https://rampupmc.blogspot.com/

Grab Bar Installation: Installing Grab bars in critical locations of a home to reduce falls.

Currently Habitat Wausau programs do not include roof replacement, led remediation, mold remediation or foundation repairs. If you have a critical home repair, ramp or grab bar installation you would like Habitat for Humanity of Wausau to consider, contact 715-343-4212 or email office@habitatwausau.org to have an application mailed to you.

GROUP WORK CAMP 2026

As many as 60 residents will benefit from the work of a projected 385 adult and teenage volunteers at the Wausau Workcamp, coming to the area on July 13 – July 18, 2025 The Workcamp will provide free home repairs through Group Mission Trips, sponsored locally by Habitat for Humanity of Wausau.

Group Mission Trips is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian volunteer home-repair organization headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado. This summer, over 10,000 young people and adults will participate in 25 Workcamps in communities across the United States.  At each Workcamp, teenagers and adults members of church youth groups—volunteer a week of their time to repair homes throughout the community.

“These really are remarkable young people,” said Tim Gilmour, President of Group Mission Trips. “Each one is actually paying for the privilege of working in your community. Workcamp registration fees are used to cover costs for food, insurance, and building materials.”

The Workcamp participants will be housed at Newman Catholic Highschool, with the campers sleeping on classroom floors, eating in the cafeteria, and enjoying evening programs in the gym. This service to the community would be impossible without the wonderful cooperation of the Newman Catholic Schools. Group Mission Trips will reimburse all costs to the lodging facility.

Households interested in a FREE home repair should complete the 2026 FREE Home Repair Application and return it to Habitat for Humanity of Wausau by February 15, 2026.  For more information, email office@habitatwausau.org or call 715-343-4212 for more information.
